Stairs to heaven

I confess that I’m a bit obsessed with stairs. They primarily provide a safe way to evacuate a building in the event of an emergency. They are dimensioned based on the use of the building and the number of occupants.  They can be curved or straight;  floating or solid; made out of metal, glass, concrete, wood, brick, etc. etc.

But they can be much more than that: they can be a source of exercise, they can speed your commute within the building or when leaving the building, they can be awe inspiring, they can have good art, they can have natural or great artificial light.

In my buildings I strive to strategically locate stairs, light them properly and embellish then in a way that is an inviting alternative to an elevator. It not only saves electricity but cuts your elevator wait time, help stay active and may help you shed weight.

I will be sharing some of my favorites.
